In 2019, I set out to develop a bass rosin that would do three things:
Excel in winter
Feel and sound great the whole concert
Never go bad
Solving all three meant learning everything I could about rosin chemistry and usage in other industries.
After 5 years of development (and 100+ failed versions), I had my ‘Eureka!’ moment. Winter bass rosin is consistent, stable, and dependable.
Winter is trickier and more time consuming to make than traditional rosin, so I handcraft every cake in very small batches and continually test new and old batches to ensure you get the same quality I use on stage.
Gum rosin is 80-90% rosin acids. Traditional bass rosins add tackifiers, softeners and other additives that loosen up these acids to increase grab of the bow on the string.
Over time, traditional bass rosin becomes brittle. The rosin acids oxidize and pack down into a tight structure. You can add solvent to re-soften the rosin, but the tacky rosin acids have undergone an irreversible chemical change.
Winter bass rosin solves this problem by giving the rosin acids the space and protection they need and virtually stops oxidation. Think of them as “free-range” rosin acids!
There’s much more to lasting grab than this, but it’s one of the biggest hurdles.
Q. Can I use Winter bass rosin year round?
Yes, Winter solves the problem of bad bass rosin in cold / dry weather but is still good the rest of the year. Above 78°F/25°C, Winter alone loses its effectiveness and is best as a base-layer for a harder or more powdering rosin.
Q. How does Winter compare to the most popular rosins like Pops or Kolstein?
Pops and Kolstein pioneered sustained grab over 50 years ago. Winter builds on that by resolving the two main issues they still face: powdering and drying out. The result is consistent grip and balanced tone throughout a performance. So you can play loud or fast passages late in a program without overworking, and still start soft or slow passages cleanly without a gritty feel.
Q. Is Winter bass rosin best by itself or with another rosin?
You will get the greatest range of articulation and sound using it by itself. For players committed to Pops, Winter also works as a base layer, letting you use less Pops while keeping its signature attack, but with fewer of the trade-offs from over-rosining.
Q. Do I need a rehair before switching to Winter?
No rehair needed. You can feel Winter’s benefits immediately, even on old hair. If your bow is powdery, add a few swipes, play briefly, then wipe the strings. Repeat once or twice until you’re happy with the feel and sound.
Q. Help, I used Winter when it was too warm (over 78°F/25°C) and my hair is not gripping as well!
Above 78°F, Winter loses grip. If your bow feels slick, add a few swipes of a harder, more powdery rosin (old Pops, Nymans, or even violin/viola/cello rosin), play it in for a couple minutes, and wipe the strings. Repeat if needed. In hot summer climates, it’s best to set Winter aside until it cools down.
Q. Winter is not gripping as well right after a rehair as it did before. Did I do something wrong?
Winter alone can be a bit too “soft” to break in new hair during warmer times of the year. Alternating with swipes of a harder/drier rosin (old Pops or Kolstein, etc.) will help get the hair going so that you don’t end up with the lack of grab that comes from having applied too much rosin.
Q. Do you ship to my country?
Yes! The countries in the menu above are just the ones already setup with automated checkout.
Shipping is free worldwide when you order 2+ rosins. It took some time to make that possible, but now you can get Winter anywhere.
Some unlisted countries may still add a customs fee, and I’ll confirm any charges first so there are no surprises.
If your country isn’t listed, please email me with your name, address, and quantity, and I’ll confirm shipping for you:

Q. Will you make any other bass rosins?
I’ve been working on a stabilized version of a certain popular bass rosin for a few years. Dialing it in takes a lot of testing and tweaking. Stay tuned!
Your current rosin needs some help in colder / dryer conditions.
You want easy, clear articulation and tone.
You want more playing time between rehairs.
You are a jazz/folk player who needs their bow ready at a moment’s notice through a long show.
You want that extra gear for big musical moments.
Winter playing temp is 76°F (25°C) or above.
Winter is best suited for intermediate or advanced/professional level players who will have the bow control and experience to make the most of this rosin.
You are a powder-style player.
You are looking for a solo rosin.
