In 2019, I set out to develop a bass rosin that would do three things:
Excel in winter
Feel and sound great the whole concert
Never go bad
Solving all three meant learning everything I could about rosin chemistry and usage in other industries.
After 5 years of development (and 100+ failed versions), I had my ‘Eureka!’ moment. Winter bass rosin is consistent, stable, and dependable.
Winter is trickier and more time consuming to make than traditional rosin, so I handcraft every cake in very small batches and continually test new and old batches to ensure you get the same quality I use on stage.
Gum rosin is 80-90% rosin acids. Traditional bass rosins add tackifiers, softeners and other additives that loosen up these acids to increase grab of the bow on the string.
Over time, traditional bass rosin becomes brittle. The rosin acids oxidize and pack down into a tight structure. You can add solvent to re-soften the rosin, but the tacky rosin acids have undergone an irreversible chemical change.
Winter bass rosin solves this problem by giving the rosin acids the space and protection they need and virtually stops oxidation. Think of them as “free-range” rosin acids!
There’s much more to lasting grab than this, but it’s one of the biggest hurdles.
Q. Can I use Winter bass rosin year round?
Yes, Winter solves the problem of bad bass rosin in cold / dry weather but is still good the rest of the year. Above 78°F/25°C, Winter alone loses its effectiveness and is best as a base-layer for a harder or more powdering rosin.
Q. How does Winter compare to the most popular rosins like Pops or Kolstein?
It’s been more than 50 years since the major innovations that Pops and Kolstein first brought to bass rosin – most prominently sustained grab. It has taken me years of tinkering to understand these deceptively complex rosins. Winter improves on these innovations by solving powdering – the #1 enemy of grab on the string – and drying out. By solving powdering and balancing tone with grab, Winter stays consistent through the performance. This means you don’t have to overwork for loud or fast passages late in the program. Plus you can still get clean starts to soft or slow passages without a gritty “over-rosined” feel.
Q. Will Winter work for cold & wet climates?
Yes, Winter is great even in humid or damp climates. As long as the playing space is within the ideal temperature range of 60-75°F (15-24°C), you’re good!
Q. Is Winter bass rosin best by itself or with another rosin?
You will get the greatest range of articulation and sound using it by itself. For professional orchestral bassists who are very committed to Pops, Winter is great as a base-layer boost without changing the specific start-of-the-note quality of Pops. You’ll be able to use less Pops and still get that solid feel with less of the trade-offs that come from putting on too much Pops.
Q. Do you ship to my country?
Yes! The countries listed in the international shipping menu above are just the ones I have already found optimal shipping methods for. In order to make sure there are no surprises on delivery, please email me with your name, address and quantity for all orders outside USA:

Q. Help, I used Winter when it was too warm (over 78°F/25°C) and my hair is not gripping as well!
Winter’s grip begins to lose it’s effectiveness above 78°F. If the bow hair starts to feel slick, just put on several swipes of some harder and more powdering rosin (old Pops, Nymans, violin/viola/cello rosin), play it in for a couple minutes, and wipe off the strings. Repeat if necessary. For people in hot summer climates, it may be best to put Winter away until the weather cool down.
Q. Will you make any other bass rosins?
I’ve been working on a stabilized version of a certain popular bass rosin for a few years. Dialing it in takes a lot of testing and tweaking. Stay tuned!
